NeighborWoods Planting Supervisor Information

The NeighborWoods Community Tree Planting program is designed to help restore the tree cover in Greensboro by planting trees in neighborhoods and open space. This program is funded by private donations and grants to Greensboro Beautiful, and is accomplished with the help of hundreds of volunteers of all ages and abilities working alongside City staff as part of a unique public/private partnership. Groups, clubs, families, and individuals are encouraged to participate in this event. It provides a hands-on opportunity to invest in the City’s natural environment, reconnect with nature, and work with other members of the community. You can feel proud that your contribution will continue to grow and beautify Greensboro for years to come.

  • This year’s NeighborWoods Tree Planting will be held on Saturday, November 5th in the Westerwood Neighborhood and adjacent Lake Daniel Park.
  • Planting supervisors should check-in at 9:15 am. Planting will begin around 10 am and will continue until all trees are planted (usually around 2 hours).
  • Volunteer duties will include soil preparation, tree planting, mulching, tree watering. Holes for the trees will already be dug.
  • There will be a limited number of shovels and picks available for volunteers to use. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own shovels and a pail or bucket for watering. Consider bringing smaller shovels (garden trowels) and watering cans for the younger members of your team. Pruning shears or wire cutters may also help to cut pots off or loosen girdling roots.
  • Tree planting will occur rain or shine. Bring work gloves if you have a pair that you personally prefer. Additionally, due to the nature of this particular project, volunteers are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and long sleeve shirts.
  • You will be working with Mother Nature and may encounter various types of natural terrain and the possibility of encountering poison oak or ivy or stinging insects. If you are concerned about poison ivy exposure, there are a number of products which can be used before and/or after exposure to protect against rashes. Please check with your local pharmacy for product recommendations. If you are allergic to stinging insects, please remember to bring an epi pen.
  • Covid Guidelines: While many Covid guidelines and restrictions have been relaxed, we encourage volunteers to continue practicing safety precautions. There will be instances of individuals gathering in close proximity, so we encourage all volunteers to bring and wear a mask in these situations. Additionally, Additionally, if you are or have been experiencing symptoms of illness at the time of the event, including Covid, we respectfully ask that you not attend. We will miss you but appreciate your understanding!
