Keep A Look Out for Litter

By Ilse Garcia

Aside from being unsightly, litter can create issues in our local ecosystem, polluting our waterways, harming animals who mistake litter for food, and even leaving microplastics in the environment. This is why, year after year, Greensboro Beautiful and our volunteers strive to revitalize the locations around town with the biggest litter problems.

Join us on February 7th at our annual Community Litter Index and help keep Greensboro Beautiful! We will spend the day driving through every district of the city and assess areas that are in the deepest need of being cleaned. Volunteers will take into consideration the presence and frequency of litter, abandoned and junk vehicles, illegal signs, graffiti, and outside storage.

As an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, our organization uses the insights from this annual event to update our litter hotspot map and inform all of our cleanup efforts throughout the year. Our Community Litter Index provides Greensboro Beautiful with key data points that allow us to focus on education, beautification, and litter prevention programs in the areas of our city that need it most.

Email [email protected] to join us on January 9, 2025 from 8:00am-4:00pm and help us create our litter cleanup goals for the year!

Looking for more ways to tackle litter in your community? We have plenty of ways to get involved in the new year!

  • Get a group of 15 people or less and clean up a site of your choice.
Select a cleanup site from our litter hotspot map (or suggest your own site), fill out this form, and take pictures before and after your cleanup to document your hard work. Upload your photos to Instagram and Facebook and tag Greensboro Beautiful, and dispose of collected litter with your residential trash and recycling as normal.
  • Keep an eye out for our 2025 Winter Wipeout next February.

Our annual month-long clean up event will be back in 2025 to help beautify and keep our city clean.

Join our Greatest American Cleanup efforts next spring.

  • In 2025, Greensboro Beautiful will be sponsoring litter cleanups starting on NC Arbor Day (March 21) and ending on Earth Day (April 31) as part of the Greatest American Cleanup, the country’s biggest litter cleanup efforts yet. This unique event calls for people all over the country to pick up 25 billion pieces of litter and beautify 25,000 communities across America in time for her 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.

We hope to see you at our upcoming events and we thank you in advance for doing your part to keep our city clean, safe, and beautiful!
