Within Lindley Park at Market Street & Starmount Drive

The Greensboro Arboretum began as a joint project of Greensboro Beautiful and the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department to provide the community with an outstanding collection of plants for study and enjoyment. This 17-acre site features 12 permanent plant collections and special display gardens, structural features including a fountain, overlook, arbor, gazebo, bridges, and benches. Its extensive variety of plants offer rich educational
opportunities for children and adults, landscape designers & homeowners.

The Collections:

  • The New Garden Landscaping & Nursery Sequence of Bloom Collection - featuring plants which blossom at progressive seasons for year-round beauty.

  • Conifer Collection - cone-bearing plants

  • Groundcover Collection - low-growing, spreading plants
  • William R. Findley Sun Shrub Collection - plants which grow well in full sun

  • Small Tree Collection - a variety of relatively compact trees (many of which have been donated as memorials or honoraria)

  • Greensboro Council of Garden Clubs Winter Garden Collection - featuring plants with interest during the winter months, and a gazebo for weddings, meetings and relaxation

  • Hydrophytic Collection - plants thriving in moist soil

  • Irene H. McIver Vine Collection & Perennial Border - a variety of climbing plants trained to grow on the landmark Arbor which is surrounded by a four-foot border of perennials providing spring, summer and fall beauty

  • Gate City Kiwanis Club Shade Shrub Collection - plants which grow in varying degrees of shade
  • Green Hill Farm Hosta Collection - approximately 200 hostas can been seen spring through fall >>

  • Dwarf Conifer Collection - more than 80 different species of small conifers showcased in front of the Arboretum Education Facility
Other special garden areas and features include:
  • The R.R. Allen Family Butterfly Garden & Fountain - a focal point from the Overlook and nestled within the Hydrophytic Collection

  • Beeson Rhododendron Garden - over 70 varieties blossoming from May to late June
  • Wildflower Trail - Native wildflowers and ferns line the wooded trail and provide interest in all seasons

  • James W. Newlin Holly Garden - a vast collection of holly varieties

  • Woodland Trail - a nature walk with discovery stations winds through an old established forest

  • Blanche S. Benjamin Overlook - ramped for handicapped accessibility, the Overlook provides a panoramic view of the Arboretum.

  • Kaplan Family Rose Garden - first-class collection of roses developed and maintained in conjunction with the Greensboro Rose Society.

Each year at the Arboretum Education Facility, Greensboro Beautiful sponsors a Garden Seminar Series in partnership with the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Guilford County and the Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department.
